Definition :

An exporter who undertakes compensated exchanges is forced to receive or purchase goods or services from its foreign customer in order to obtain a contract, the goods being a supplement to or a substitute for cash payment.

Compensation products are not always products manufactured by the importer. They may come from another company contractually related to the importer called the third party seller. After having received the compensation products, the exporter can then sell them either to the end user, or to a trader. They can also - either directly or using a specialised operator - contact a third party buyer who undertakes to take delivery of the products against payment.
